Description

Trips to India are always adventurous. There is so much to see. It seems to be like traveling in time.

My trip started in New Delhi, from there I pursued the golden triangle - Delhi - Agra with Taj Mahal and The pink city of Jaipur.

Then I set off for Nepal. A few days in Kathmadnu and then back on the road heading to Pokhara. There I made some trekking around the Annapurna range.

It was a great chill after the Indian hell (45° C in shadow). Nepal offers great trekks with various difficulty.

Consequently I started my journey back to India through Sunauli at the Nepali-Indian border. I read a lot stories about people being scamed on the journey so I was extremely cautious and really did not pay anaything extra. I used a shared car to the city of Gorakhpur from where I had train tickets to Varanasi.

I was a night train. Several hour delays are quite usual in India so my train had delay of 3 hours. But I finally made it to Varanasi. The holy city of hinduism. Really unusual experience to see cremation and the ceremony of funeral in the Ganges. After that I took a night train again and went back to New Delhi.

Some scams I have experinced there:

taxi drivers take to a different hotels than you wanted, usually more expensive ones (they have some commission there)

  • taxi drivers take you to different restaurants than you wanted
  • real price is usually half or less of the original price
  • fake tickets to temples - for some sights you do need to pay any entrace fee, but some locals wanna exploit the foreigner's ignorace and sell him/her fake tickets to these sights. Tickets are never sold outside or on the street in India! Be aware.
  • every product in a grocery store has the MRP - maximal retail price - usually written on the label of the product, do not pay more than MRP shows
